Keepsakes of Comfort: A Tribute to Her Father

In December 2020, eleven-year-old Annabelle Chadbourne faced the sudden and devastating loss of her father, Chad Chadbourne, just days before Christmas. Losing her dad at such a young age was scary and heartbreaking for her.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Annabelle couldn't visit her father in the hospital before he passed. The night he died, Annabelle’s mom brought home a small white box from Sacred Heart Hospital. Inside were precious items: a fingerprint painting of her dad’s fingers, an ornament with his heartbeat, a shell, tissues, a grief booklet, and more.

“Although I never stepped into Sacred Heart Hospital, they made sure I felt comforted. Opening that box filled me with love and support.” Annabelle remembers with a heart full of gratitude. Inspired by this gesture, Annabelle painted a poignant image of the white box, a tribute to her father’s memory and the hospital’s kindness.

Annabelle’s dad, Chad, was an organ donor. He donated his heart and 3 other organs. Even amid her profound grief, Annabelle shared a dream with her mom after her dads passing: one day, she hopes to meet her father’s heart recipient and have them walk her down the aisle. This story reflects the enduring impact of compassion and love, and solace in the face of loss.
