Brody's Brave Journey: Conquering Crohn's
In 2019, at the start of his third-grade year, Brody Ryan began experiencing recurring fevers that sometimes lasted for days. His mom, Sarah, sensed something was seriously wrong and advocated for Brody to get some bloodwork done with his local pediatrician. When his bloodwork indicated further testing was necessary, Brody’s doctor referred him to Studer Family Children’s Hospital. After a series of tests, Brody was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, admitted to the hospital immediately, and began treatment. Crohn’s disease is a rare autoimmune condition that causes chronic inflammation of the intestines.
Today, Brody continues to receive intravenous medication at the Pediatric Infusion Center and remains under the care of pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Alan Sacks at Studer Family Children’s Hospital. Both Brody and Sarah are deeply grateful for the exceptional care Brody has received since his diagnosis.
“I don’t think people realize how lucky we are to have the Studer Family Children’s Hospital,” Sarah says. “It’s such a wonderful asset to our community, and we’re so fortunate to have them so close. It’s important that the community continues to support them and their mission of helping our children when they need it most.”
Sarah also shares a message of hope: “Though the journey can be a roller coaster of emotions, going through a diagnosis like this, brings incredible strength in our children. With love and support, from both family and doctors, their life can be more about being a kid and less about their diagnosis.”
