Drew Barefield’s remarkable journey from trauma survivor to a dedicated professional at Sacred Heart Hospital is a story of resilience, hope, and full-circle healing.
In 2014, at the age of 12, Drew’s life was forever changed when he was struck by a passing boat while snorkeling in Choctawhatchee Bay. The accident left him in critical condition, requiring multiple surgeries and 75 days of intensive care at Sacred Heart Hospital. During his recovery, Drew’s unwavering spirit and "can-do" attitude inspired not only his family and medical team but also fellow pediatric patients.
In recognition of his strength, Drew was named the Florida Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion in 2016, serving as an ambassador to raise awareness and funds for children’s hospitals nationwide. His story of survival and perseverance touched the hearts of many, as he became a symbol of hope and determination for others facing medical challenges.
Now, nearly a decade after his life-changing experience, Drew has come full circle—returning to the hospital where he was once a patient. Today, Drew works as a Project Manager for Medxcel, a subsidiary of Ascension, and understands that facilities serve a higher purpose – providing safety and comfort to patients. In his new role, Drew applies the skills he’s learned to ensure that others receive the best care possible, just as he did.
Drew’s journey has come to symbolize not just survival, but the incredible impact of the care provided at Sacred Heart Hospital. His commitment to making a difference for patients and their families is a testament to the love and support he received during his recovery, and it continues to inspire everyone who meets him.
As Drew reflects on his path from patient to healthcare professional, he remains deeply grateful for the medical team at Sacred Heart who gave him a second chance at life. Now, as a part of that same team, Drew is dedicated to helping others experience the same healing and hope that changed his life forever.
